Aldrin salutes the U.S. Flag, 1969, NASA.

During the 1960s, the United States was behind the Soviets in the Space Race.  On July 20th, 1969, a barrier in space travel and technology was overcome as NASA landed men on the moon and returned them safely to beat the Soviets in the Space Race.  Shortly after, people all over the world united to celebrate this amazing human achievement. It changed history by opening a new era in space exploration, spurred the environmental movement, accelerated innovations in computer technology and played a small role in the eventual end of the Cold War.
