In 1885, New Zealand suffragette Kate Sheppard began the campaign that led to the passage of the 1893 Electoral Act, making New Zealand the first country to enfranchise women. During the campaign, Sheppard employed her communication skills, including orating and writing, to gain support for women’s suffrage. In the short term, New Zealand women won the right to vote and suffrage movements worldwide gained traction. In the long term, Sheppard's communication tactics inspired women to fight for equality in politics, economics, and beyond.
