Hedy Lamarr in My Favorite Spy, pixels.com, 1951

In the words of Tracey Deutsch who specializes in old Hollywood, “Hedy Lamarr was distinctive because she was both an inventor and had a very successful acting career.” Hedy Lamarr with the help of George Antheil created frequency hopping, shattering many of the misogynistic views had on women in the 1940s.

By manipulating radio frequencies at irregular intervals between transmission and reception, the invention formed an unbreakable code that could prevent secret messages from being intercepted. When their invention was developed into Wi-Fi and Bluetooth they finally got the credit they deserved. In fact, Lamarr was the first woman awarded the Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award for her invention.
