Elizabeth Van Lew spied courageously during the Civil War, utilizing daring forms of communication to support the Union. As a result of her espionage work in Richmond, Van Lew was praised by President Grant, but bitterly ostracized by Southerners after the war. Until her death, she contested titles of “traitor” or “spy,” seeking to be called what she always aspired to be - “faithful” (Casstevans).
“For my loyalty to my country, I have two beautiful names -
here I am called, ‘Traitor,’
farther North a ‘Spy’ -
instead of the honored name of ‘Faithful’” (Casstevans).
