The human rights of the residents of the Indian subcontinent were violated.
Over twelve million people were refugees as displacement arrangements were not decided properly beforehand. As conflicts continued between Hindus and Muslims over where each religious group should be, over half a million people died as well. The lack of arrangements for the displaced people is a clear infringement on the well-known right that people have to not be forcibly displaced. Again, the lack of arrangements was due to negligence and haste on the part of the British.

Without their consent or knowledge beforehand, communities in areas like Bengal and Punjab were divided. This is a clear infringement on the well-known rights of a people to information regarding their community, the right to self-governance of an independent community, and the right to stay with family. This again led to increased tension between Hindus and Muslims in the area due to the chaos of communal separation.
