An Odyssey to Freedom
The Underground Railroad was a network of people and houses that led slaves to freedom. Since most of the escapees had little to no education, they used quilt patterns and railroad codewords to communicate their messages in a way that only they could understand. They worked to show the world that skin color doesn't change smarts. This operation was one of the most successful in history and gave courage to so many of the Civil War fighters to win their freedom.
The Woman Jumps into a river to not get caught by her master. She chooses dying rather than going back to work as a slave. This shows how harsh the punishments were for getting caught running away or doing something that they were not supposed to (Digital Public Library of America 1880).
