Amelia Earhart: Airborne Feminist
(Dick Ballou, 1941)
Women pilots knew the importance of standing together for their cause, so Ninety-Nines organization was founded November 2, 1929, in New York. All of the 117 certified women pilots at the time were invited to come together for the advancement of aviation. The goal of the Ninety-Nines was to inspire women to reach their goals and become pilots. Amelia Earhart became the first president of the Ninety-Nines in 1931 and used the group to help change the way society perceived women through flight. The group was named the Ninety-Nines to represent the original 99 charter members of the group.

The Ninety-Nines organization has expanded a lot since it first was founded. The organization is now opened up to student pilots. The organization also attends many international conferences around the world. All across the world, there are different sections and chapters of the organization. The Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship and Award helps promote women's aviation and honor aviators.
"Taking stock of The Ninety-Nines, I see in our members a pioneering spirit as well as an enthusiasm for ideas and innovation. We have outstanding members who strive for excellence in all they do." ~Joyce Wells, Ninety-Nines President 1994-96
