In 1977, the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) brought a class action case against the Tyler, Texas Independent School District (Tyler ISD) on behalf of four undocumented families. Plyler v. Doe challenged the exclusion of undocumented children in public schools and established that all students, regardless of immigration status, have the constitutional right to education, which the government is responsible for making accessible to all. The ruling has since reinforced the fundamental nature of education for all children.
