The Mayo brothers used anesthesia in operations, closely watching new advancements in the field. Mayo Clinic became one of the first hospitals to use gas anesthesia.

Mayo doctors developed ways to address anxious patients, changing where anesthesia was administered. Previously, anesthesia was delivered in a separate room. Mayo doctors delivered anesthesia in the operating room, causing less anxiety for the patient.

Mayo personnel thoroughly cleaned surfaces, previously an uncommon practice. Operating areas were disinfected, surgeons wore latex gloves and bandages covering wounds were changed daily to prevent infections. Antiseptic surgery was a new approach at the clinic.
