Starts in November of 1095, it ends in December of 1096
The Peoples Crusade was a mob of people from any level in society some were commoners that didn't want to wait for the government's formal expedition. They were inexperienced and unprepared but were ready to fight because they'd be cleared of the sins they had committed. But also have great rewards in the after-life. The People's Crusade started when Pope Urban II made a speech to the Council of Clermont. He wanted Christian Warriors to fight and reclaim Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks. A short time after, a Monk called Peter the Hermit started preaching for a Crusade. Peter the Hermit was a well respected preacher. (Look at People's Crusade Primary Sources. Many people believed Peter, men, women, nobles, the elderly, commoners, children, and even serfs. People admired him so much that even though they had little food, little money, and little martial experience they went right then. Some even followed Peter around. Their journey was going to start in March of 1096. The Crusade was on, first by marching to the Danube, then to Hungary. The Crusade moved south to the Byzantine Empire capital, Constantinople. The Peoples Crusade brought short-term consequences like the shortage of food and loss of life. These consequences happened because the Crusaders pillaged their way to the Byzantines' Empire. They burned mills, trampled crops, and traded hostages for supplies. A large loss of life occurred when the People's Crusade fought an opposing army or when it raided a city or village. The People's Crusade arrived in Constantinople (Byzantium), the worst was still to begin.
When Peter the Hermit arrived in Byzantium, Walter Sans Avoir's Army army had already been waiting there for weeks. The Emperor was still waiting on the main body of crusaders grouping up in Europe. The Emperor suggested that the People's Crusade stay and join up the main force, the People's Crusade leaders agreed to this. But the people didn't want to wait! They had worked so hard and lost many people. They wanted to go now! After less than a week the Emperor realized this. Also, he took into perspective that they had little supplies or food. So he ferried the People's Crusade across the Bosporus river and into Asia Minor. The Crusaders were in hostile territory. The Crusaders had little food or water, so like normal humans, they began to panic. Peter realized their situation and went back to Constantinople and asked for help from the Emperor. The Crusaders split into two groups, made up of Germans with a few Italians, the other made up of French men. At the end of September, French Crusaders took a suburb of Nicaea. The German group heard this and wanted to do it too. But, Turkish forces expected an attack and surrounded the German crusaders. You had two options be killed right on the spot or convert to Islam where you'd be sent east where you wouldn't be seen again. Then the Turks sent a forged message to the French, telling them of the riches the Germans had found. They ignored the elder's word and took off, just to be ambushed at Civetot. Where every single Crusader was slaughtered. This marked the end of the Peoples Crusade.
