Responsibilities

Responsibilities

In Hawaii at the time, the understanding was that the government in general is supposed to be doing what's right for the citizens. Whether it was a monarchy or a provisional government, the citizens expected the government to have their backs and look out for them. Therefore, doing what's right by the citizens is a responsibility of the government. We believe that the provisional government wasn't truly filling that responsibility nor actually trying to fulfill it.

When the Provisional Government took over Hawaii, it was by force. You had people protesting with the Queen. When it came to annexation, even more Hawaiians protested. Over 21,000 Hawaiians signed a petition against it. While there were people who thought the petition wasn't valid, the petition still showed how much people cared. But the Provisional Government still wanted annexation. So it was almost as if the monarchy had no chance to be revived. This shows that they didn't meet their responsibilities of listening to and doing what's right by their citizens.
