The Cuban Missile Crisis, which started on October 16th, 1962, was a political provocation from the side of the Soviet Union involving Cuba that turned out to be the closest moment in history where Man was willing to destroy itself but was ultimately averted by the diplomatic decisions coming from U.S. President J.F. Kennedy and ExComm.
