MISCOMMUNICATION

Pride Over Pity | How the Attack Could've Been Prevented

The CIA and FBI have had a very competitive history together, their stark competitiveness led to not disclosing vital information with each other. The FBI even sent a letter to the CIA, The contents of this letter would reveal that a flight school might be training jihadists unknowingly. The letter also suspected that Osama Bin laden had plans to strike infrastructure with planes in a coordinated attack on the United States. The CIA would not see this letter until after 9/11 if they had they could’ve stopped the untimely demise of over 2,900 people. The FBI was even kept from notifying the CIA about who and where the jihadist was. Zacarias Moussaoui was a jihadist who had flight knowledge, the FBI knew he was an extremist but couldn’t properly communicate with the CIA. The two intelligence agencies would use these mistakes to better strengthen their communications with each other.

The 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were far more elaborate, precise, and destructive than any of these earlier assaults. But by September 2001, the executive branch of the U.S. government, the Congress, the news media, and the American public had received clear warning that Islamist terrorists meant to kill Americans in high numbers. -9/11 Report

     Hindsight Is 20/20 | Recovering After 9/11

Osama Bin Ladin's Letter to America.

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 was a major reform to help communication between the two agencies. The act determined that one person would oversee both the agencies and he would be named director of intelligence Thomas McNamara would be the first director. For more efficiency, the reform would also put the agency's counterterrorism center under one roof. Legislation edicted that the agencies should facilitate an easy way to share confidential information. Substantial progress has been made but, GAO or Government Accountability Office has placed goals on increasing efficiency and communication. In the end, 9/11 could’ve been avoided but because of pride, mediocrity, and complacency, 2,900 people died. More will die in the future if we don’t understand the effects of our actions in the middle east and the world.
