Long Term Effects of 9/11

Many of the 9/11 survivors and humanitarian workers experienced a wide range of effects due to their efforts at Ground Zero. A study done by the US National Libary of Medicine says " Evaluation of 183 cleanup workers showed new-onset cough (33%), wheeze (18%), and phlegm production (24%)." around 3000-5000 people were affected by these hindrances due to the rubble. Many would later develop certain types of cancers such as Prostate Cancer Thyroid Cancer and multiple Myeloma all became apparent among the rescues and recovery workers.

Many of these men and women contracted these effects from the WTC dust. "About 80–90% of the settled WTC, ranging in particle size from ~2.5 μm upward, was a highly Alkaline mixture of crushed Concrete, Gypsum, and synthetic vitreous fibers (SVFs) that was readily suspendable by physical disturbance and low-velocity air currents." Many of these substances were inhaled by many of the first responders, and the humanitarian workers consequently causing these hindrances that they are experiencing now in their present lives.

Mental Health Effects

Due to the severity of the event, many of the victims and relief workers suffered from many different mental health issues. Many of these events lead to some people finding an outlet for their newfound troubles because of what they saw, heard, or experienced

"A study of 36,897 members of the World Trade Center Health Registry (WTCHR) showed that many experienced long-lasting effects from the event. Specifically, 14.2% suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 15.3% suffered from depression when studied in 2015–2016".-Study on Mental Health Preceding 9/11

Coupled with the fact that those around the world had family members working at the towers many dealing with grief could have started expressing the effects of depression. Many of the people who were in the area of the twin towers who experienced the chaos suffered from PTSD. Many as 67,000 new york residences started experiencing PTSD because of the event many have a hard time around sirens and other things that could bring them back to that day.​​​​​​​

  Numerous people across the world experienced PTSD due to the videos of people jumping off the building due to the heat and the fires for many Americans the loss of the towers and the innocent lives was a hard burden to bear. Many of the men and women in New York saw many people jump out of the buildings this showed to resonate with them for the rest of their lives. Along with many other factors such as the wars that followed that many people's sons and daughters and husbands and wives decided to make the step to take up arms against al-Qaeda. Along with the sense of insecurity, many Americans felt PTSD became a heavy burden to bear for many of those who experienced this extremely traumatic event in American history.
