WOMEN
The 1930’s was a trying time for women, in many cases they were only important for certain things. Many women sought change and bravely voiced their opinions.
TYPICAL ROLE
Many women during the 1930’s stayed at home during the day. They did things around the house such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children. More and more women entered the workforce during the Depression. This inspired many other women to aspire for better jobs and working for greater causes.
THE PRESS
"Unless women reporters could find something new to write about, the chances were that some of them would lose their jobs in a very short time.”
~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Eleanor Roosevelt gathered with women reporters. FDR Library, National First Ladies Library.
Eleanor Roosevelt devoted much of her time to helping make way for women reporters. She had a women only press corps. She tried to give them stories first. The Roosevelt’s held press conferences at the White House for women only reporters. It was very difficult for a woman journalist to get a job and her articles noticed. Eleanor did all she could to support these women's careers.
