Thesis:

Building up to the 1972 US presidential election, the Nixon White House grew increasingly paranoid about re-election and the Democratic party. To ensure victory, a series of break-ins of the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee took place, where Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the President attempted to rob and wiretap the office. The burglars were caught, and the ensuing Watergate Scandal was a turning point in the political and social climate of the United States. The scandal significantly increased distrust in government, exacerbated political polarization, and shifted the role of the media. Furthermore, both parties were reshaped after Watergate, and widespread government reform helped sculpt a new America.
