During the 1960s in America, Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring revealed the dangers of pesticides like DDT. According to Carson, pesticides destroyed the food chain and hurt the health of humans; additionally, the more they were used, the more immune insects became to them. Due to multiple competing priorities and interests, Silent Spring sparked intense debate between the public, scientists, chemical companies, and the federal government. The book increased public recognition of pesticides as harmful environmental contaminants and led America to multiple environmental policies.
