Devil Dog Canines:
A Line of Communication in WW2

Thor

Thor, a German Shepherd, also served in the Bougainville Campaign. His handlers were Pfc. Homer Finley and Pfc. John Carter.

"During training, the Army introduced its new recruit to two other German shepherds also learning ropes — Caesar and Thor. These three eventually made up the messenger dog unit of the 1st Marine War Dog Platoon." - War Animals: The Unsung Heroes of World War II by Robin Hutton, 2018

Thor’s obedience and alertness was credited with saving the lives of the Marines in fighting against the Japanese in Bougainville. Although there is not much documentation of Thor’s specific actions during the war, he will always be remembered as a member of the 1st Marine War Dog Platoon’s messenger unit.
