THE SCOPES TRIAL: THE GREAT
FUNDAMENTALIST-MODERNIST SCHISM

"During the eight-day trial, they [William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow] would fight an epic battle. A duel over science and religion. Faith and agnosticism. The book of Darwin and the Book of Genesis."
~ Linda Hunt

In 1925, a court case was initiated over the legality of a science teacher John Scopes teaching evolution at a high school in Tennessee, becoming known as the Scopes Trial. The trial set off a national discussion over the theory of evolution that ushered in fundamentalist and modernist ideas from across the United States, challenged state law and censorship in the education system, and magnified the importance of communication in the conflict between science and religion.
