Martha Ripley and Her Fight for Maternity Hospitals

Martha Ripley,1898, MNopedia.

In 1886, Dr. Martha George Ripley opened the first Maternity Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Maternity Hospital provided medical attention for new mothers and children born out of wedlock, a service that was previously denied as a result of the social barriers at the time. Through the success of the Hospital, Dr. Ripley advocated for disadvantaged women’s rights and broke social barriers by reducing the stigma associated with pregnancy outside of wedlock. As a result of her work, women now have the ability to get the proper medical treatment needed during their pregnancies.
