The Pentagon Papers, exposed to the public in June 1971 by The New York Times, unleashed a nationwide debate on free press versus national security. Diplomatically settled by the Supreme Court, the eventual victory for the Times led to greater media rights; however, it also created a significant credibility gap between the public and the government that would persist.
