In July of 1848, women began to fight for suffrage at a national level creating many different organizations. Suffragettes across America held a convention in Seneca Falls, New York which kicked off the suffrage movement.
In the following years women started coming together to discuss their grievances, and eventually protested and fought for their rights.
But this Amendment did not pass right away, suffragettes did not give up on their focus for women's suffrage, and worked within their states to make change. Ultimately, Congress would pass the Amendment in June of 1919.
Theodora Youmans joined many other suffragettes in fighting for the 19th Amendment to be ratified. After much struggle, on June 10, 1919, Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the 19th amendment, securing women's right to vote.
