Effects of Sakoku

                         Effects of Sakoku

After Sakoku ended, life was very different for Japanese people than before. While in Sakoku, laws were very strict. If anyone disobeyed the edicts set in place it would result in the death penalty of being killed in horrific ways. Because of this Japanese people had little freedom. After Sakoku ended they were able to leave the country to travel, practice their preferred religion, ext. Because they had been isolated from other cultures their religion and culture were strong, so the majority of people remained within the Japanese culture. That was actually the whole point of the isolation.  If you were to go to Japan today you would see that their culture is still quite stable today.

That wasn't the only impact Sakoku had. Sakoku affected Japan economically as well. It wasn't like this at first, Japan was considered a country that lagged behind Europe because they had been isolated for so long. In the 1980s ( about 100 years later) this belief of Japan was changed. The Edo period (The period Sakoku took place) is now considered an era of economic growth. The economic growth that occurred during this time was the foundation for the economy Japan has today. Although the effects Sakoku had on Japan are controversial, I can say that the impact of this event was both negative and positive but helped develop Japan into the country it is today.
