THESIS

The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 represented a critical turning point in history. Prior to the Act, factories were unsanitary and contained various public health hazards. These facilities had poor, perilous working conditions like hazardous machinery. Along with this, goods unsafe for public consumption were produced, which at worst consisted of fatal chemicals. The Pure Food and Drug Act was established, and fundamentally improved conditions for laborers and consumers. This act enabled government inspections in factories, followed by termination if regulations were not imposed. Therefore, The Pure Food and Drug Act ushered an era of consumer protection, public health regulation, and government oversight in business. The Food and Drug Administration was then manifested by the 1906 act; regulating consumer products.
