It was believed that a mummified body was not meant to be a source of entertainment. However, this is exactly what happened to Elmer McCurdy in the early 1900s. He was a well known criminal and gained a reputation with his life of crime, and when he died his body was taken to Pawhuska, Oklahoma (“History Simple”). McCurdy changed the frontier of what was considered entertainment, and brought a shocking element to entertainment. He was the first mummy to be used on display. Elmer lived a life of crime. His mummified body impacted entertainment. McCurdy influenced how and what was considered entertainment and brought a shock value to the public. He was important in the history of traveling entertainment. Elmer’s body was taken to Pawhuska for an autopsy and no one claimed him ( “History Simple'’). Joseph Jhoson, the person who did the autopsy, was not being paid for his services so he covered Elmer in arsenic and put Elmer in a closet (“History Simple”). He then had the idea to charge people to come and see Elmer by putting a nickel in his mouth (“History Simple”). Five years passed and two people appeared to Johnson and said that they were his brothers to take his body for burial, but instead they were two carnival workers who took Elmer to a side show for entertainment (“History Simple”). Elmer was named “The Outlaw That Refused to Die” (“The Bandit That Never Gave Up”).
I chose Elmer Mc Curdy because I was struggling with my revolver topic and it just so happens, I was watching youtube and saw a video about Elmer . The main reason I chose Elmer, is because I had never had a topic like this in my life and I thought it would be interesting .
I conducted my research by using primary sources via images about the time
Elmers robberies and crime throughout his life . My website's color scheme
that I chose is black and white. I have chosen this because of the no color
in films at the time period the images were Elmer being displayed in a coffin and being lowered into his grave. One of the helpful sources was youtube, as
It described Elmer on my website. I did struggle with my youtube sources
because there was so much.
I could add sources but the limit was 4, so I struggle with
the 2nd Sources but I never changed my primary sources, somehow I do not
know why, but overall it was a great research paper.
