The Privacy Act of 1974 had a profound impact on rights and responsibilities due to the great increase of protection and the furthered regulations on privacy. Data collecting was becoming a dangerous problem and the Privacy Act made great progress in making websites safer to use. Corporations were allowed to collect and use information without consent from all parties involved. Citizens were worried about the safety of their data because corporations were allowed to sell it and use it as they wished.

Tim Cook
"I consider data protection to be one of the most important issues of the 21st century. We need a bill of rights for the digital world!"
- Tim Cook, CEO of Apple

The Privacy Act also inspired COPPA and HIPPA to be created. The Patriot Act, created in 2001, went against many things said in the Privacy act. The USA FREEDOM Act attempted to ensure safety and privacy. In total, the Privacy Act of 1974 gave people more rights, and the government more responsibility.
