On March 16, 1945, a small island in the Pacific Ocean called Iwo Jima became U.S. territory after a month of fighting against the Imperial Japanese Army. This seemingly insignificant island would prove to be a major turning point in the war, leading to the rescue of thousands of fighter planes, and soon after, creating powerful U.S and Japan relations that emerged from the war. The U.S. Marine Corps' iconic image during the battle inspired Americans to aid the war effort and left a lasting impact in the remembrance of the Marines' valor.
