In the 1950s and 1960s, communication was very different than it is today.  Apart from broadcast media, Soviet and American posters were an important way of communicating the importance of the Space Race.  Posters were crucial in influencing and informing the public about each country's space programs and military.

While newspapers, radio, and television were used frequently, U.S. broadcasting companies controlled what people would and would not hear. Unlike broadcast media and newspapers, the U.S. government had complete control of the messages conveyed in posters.  The Soviet government controlled all communications, however.

Posters were a good option because they were compact, provided information, and made it difficult for other people to manipulate. These posters did not just provide facts but also contained persuasive slogans or pictures that supported the nation’s pride and military. Soviet and American posters displayed the prestigious roles astronauts had and their strong connection to the military and its importance. Promoting pride was an essential component because it made citizens feel like they mattered, but more importantly, it made them support the Space Race.
