Role of the Catholic Church

ROLE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

(Jaime Cardinal Sin, c.1986)

The popular Catholic Church’s support of the Revolution influenced large-scale action against Marcos.

The secret Church radio, Radio Veritas, was essential in generating public support and communicating protest information.

On February 22, Cardinal Sin sought to rally protesters, calling for peaceful mobilization over the radio.

“Get out from your cells, proceed from the chapel with outstretched arms, singing. You are Moses” (Ellison 243).
- Cardinal Sin urging participation

“I am calling our people to support our two good friends at the camp [Aguinaldo]…I would only wish that violence and bloodshed would be avoided” (Samson).
- Cardinal Sin expressing concern for Enrile and Ramos

(Two Nuns of EDSA, 1986)

Nuns participated in protests, demonstrating their willingness to sacrifice for their country:

“...If really the tanks would crush us, at least the two of us... kill us sisters, not the people because we [do not] want bloodshed. I love my country” (Orendain).

Nuns from Daughters of St. Paul, February 23, 1986

The support of the Church paved the way for civilians to rally.
