"You can take down an individual, you can take down an organization, but you can't destroy a movement."

- Captain Paul Watson, 2016, Interview with Sarah Schuster (Impakter)

The Earthforce Environmental Society was founded in 1977 by Captain Paul Watson once he realized the fraudulent nature of many conservationist organizations.

"You know, basically what they’re trying to do is to appeal to the big tent. They want the people who eat fish to support them. And this was a problem when I was National Director for the Sierra Club, that was their problem. They didn’t wanna come out against hunting, against fishing, or against meat-eating. Because they thought they would lose membership support if they did. A lot of these groups aren’t interested in solving the problem, they’re interested in exploiting the problem. There’s a lot of groups out there, climate change, conservation, whatever. It’s a business. It’s a feel-good business."

Captain Paul Watson eventually acquired a ship for his organization, named Sea Shepherd. Within the next ten years, Sea Shepherd had expanded into its own independent organization. Watson's ship became the initial mark of the upcoming turning point: from indirect, inefficient conservation activism to a direct, involved, honest movement.

"You don't go down the street and watch a woman being attacked and raped and do nothing. You don't watch a child being molested and do nothing. And you don't stand there and watch whales die and hang a banner."
