Impact On Modern Day
The exposition of Willowbrook State School by Geraldo Rivera and other journalists in 1972 led to the eventual closing of the institution in 1987. Ultimately, this had a significant impact on societies understanding of those with mental disabilities today. That being said, community based services, such as public schools and universities, now put emphasis in prioritizing support for the mentally disabled. However, there are challenges that still arise today. Such as the lack of inclusion of the mental disabled in the workforce and inadequate support services. As a society, there is still an active effort to improve the policies and practices that prioritize the well-being and inclusion of people with mental disabilities.
