In conclusion, the boycott of the Moscow Summer Olympics took place under Carter’s orders, due to the Soviets presence in Afghanistan. The boycott was made official after denied offers of postponing or moving the games. The decision for the boycott was controversial and upset many athletes who were supposed to compete. The boycott, however, did not shake the position of the Soviet Union's place in Afghanistan. The Boycott led to new thoughts on government involvement in the Olympics as well as to whether it is possible to have such an event without politics becoming involved.
