 The Soviets’ invasion of Afghanistan led to a debate over Carter’s idea for a boycott on the Moscow Olympics. After many attempts at diplomacy, including giving chances to have the games moved or rescheduled, the boycott was made official,  causing continued controversy with the athletes.                   ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​
