The History of the Tornado Warning System

Thesis:

In the late 19th century, the US Weather Bureau learned how to forecast tornadoes and issue warnings, but decided to ban them, fearing they would spread panic instead of understanding that severe weather was near.  After triple-digit deaths due to tornadoes in the US, a need for an effective form of weather communication was needed. The 1947 Woodward tornado prompted the US Weather Bureau to create a national tornado warning system, because meteorologists knew what was coming and couldn’t say or do anything, causing even weather bureau employees to revolt, and eventually ending the ban and revolutionizing the communication of severe weather for the years to come.
