Jacobo Arbenz Resignation Speech (Evidence 1): 

This is Jacobo Arbenz's resignation speech when he steps down as President of Guatemala and gives control to the Chief of the Armed Forces, Carlos Enrique Diaz. Jacobo Arbenz knows that the coup d’etat of Guatemala is due to United Fruit being backed by the United States Government. He even knows that the United Fruit Company has called him a communist and that they also called his Government communist. He says that he has told the United States Government multiple times that he is not a communist like United Fruit says he is but the United States Government was controlled by United Fruit as many people in the government had involvement with United Fruit. When United Fruit asked the United States CIA to perform a coup d’etat they were very willing to with Allen Dulles as the CIA director. Guatemala couldn’t convince the American government of its innocence with United Fruit having some control of it proving that big business, being United Fruit, not only controlled the Central American governments but even had control over the United States government. Back to Carlos Enrique Diaz, the man Jacobo Arbenz put in charge of Guatemala. Carlos Enrique Diaz will lose power as the Guatemalan government continues to struggle for its people's freedom. Soon after Jacobo Arbenz’s resignation speech the government of Guatemala was overthrown and United Fruit put in a puppet president named Carlos Castillo Armas who was a disaffected Guatemalan General and fought against Carlos Enrique Diaz during the war. His presidency United Fruit to continue profiting off of the banana in Guatemala. Jacobo Arbenz resignation may have saved his life but would destroy his life, his family was exiled and had to hide behind the iron curtain as the CIA pressured any country who would take them in. The spirit of the country without its leader also died. This was a very unlucky point in history as around this period was the Cuban Revolution under Fidel Castro whom the United States did not think was communist until it was too late and they were successfully independent and an ally of their biggest rival the Soviet Union. As usual, United Fruit was able to keep Central America under its reign using a system that looks like the feudal system but instead of serfs it was Guatemalans and instead of Nobles it was the people in charge of United Fruit.
