School Segregation Today
Though schools are more diverse today, public schools remain deeply segregated. In 2021, about 60% of Black and Hispanic students attended schools where at least 75% of students were also students of color. School zoning plays a major role in this, often reflecting patterns of segregation dating back to the 1950s.
Over 13,000 mostly single-race public schools are within 10 miles of schools dominated by another race. Despite Brown v. Board of Education rejecting “separate but equal,” many Black and Hispanic students still attend high-poverty, underfunded schools.
In 2019, nonwhite school districts received $23 billion less in funding than majority-white districts. Like in 1954, school segregation remains a serious and unresolved issue.
