The Hawaiian Kingdom Civil Code tells us that the Master and Servant Act was “Enacted by the King and the Legislative Assembly of the HaÂwaiian Islands in the Legislature of the Kingdom assembled” (“Hawiian Kingdom Civil code”). This act would let sugarcane plantations bring Chinese workers to Hawaii. “On June 21, 1850, Hawaii enacted the Masters and Servants Act, which legalized apprenticeships, indentured service and the mass importation of workers from other countries” (“Sugar Cane Production”).
