Life is a Highway

How the Interstate Highway System Transformed Everyday Life in America

Thesis

The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 aimed to address the need for an improved, interconnected transportation infrastructure through the construction of the national Interstate Highway System. This extensive roadway network has become a turning point in America’s economy, society, and way of life while also negatively impacting several marginalized communities.

"More than any single action by the government since the end of the war, this one would change the face of America ...  Its impact on the American economy—the jobs it would produce in manufacturing and construction, the rural areas it would open up—was beyond calculation."

~ President Dwight D. Eisenhower
