Thesis Statement
The Cuban Missile Crisis nearly led to nuclear war. The crisis occurred during the Cold War, a time of arms races and tension between the United States and Soviet Union. Following the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, the Soviet Union placed medium-range missiles in Cuba. After the United States discovered the missiles, a 13 day standoff and debate began. The crisis ended diplomatically, with a compromise. Overall, it was a success, as it led to the improvement of communications and diplomacy between the two superpowers.
