The Hate

Though Sandra Day O'Connor being nominated to the Court may seem good to many, especially women, it marked the end of a tradition for others. Many people, mostly men, were very upset at both Reagan and O’Connor. “I am disgusted and disappointed that President Reagan has nominated a woman to the Supreme Court,” said an anonymous senior citizen. Many people sent in letters saying things like “Go back to the kitchen.” and “Let the men make the rough decisions.” Sandra Day O'Connor did not let anything like that phase her.

Reasons

Fundamentalist Carl McIntire of the International Council of Christian Churches said that they could not accept Sandra Day O’Connor since she had made her position on abortion clear in the law journal William and Mary Law Review. He said, "Our merits in an appeal have to go to five different courts then it must go up the line to the Supreme Court. This has already taken nearly two years and five courts, and the cost was nearly $200,000. It was O'Connor's position that has caused so much time and money wasted."

"You have citizens who don't understand how government works and they're kind of soured on it. All they do is criticize. They have no idea that they can make things happen."  -Sandra Day O'Connor
