making fun of the Seneca Falls Convention.
("Bolting Among the Ladies").
The Seneca Falls Convention impacted many people’s opinions on women's rights through the press. Though many people heard about the convention through the press, it had more of a negative reception than a positive one (Seneca County Courier). The convention was ruthlessly mocked and made fun of by anonymous article writers. Much of the backlash coming from the press revolved around the same idea, that ladies belong in the kitchen. One of the most notable newspaper articles says, “Was there ever such a dreadful revolt–?” as people of that time had been convinced that this convention was the worst event that could possibly happen (“Bolting Among the Ladies”). Many of the men and women who had originally signed the Declaration of Sentiments resigned their names off the document due to the commotion the press was causing (Callahan).
