Segregation in the United States determined the rights of "different individuals". Authorized by leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson, the act of removing segregation contrived of significant struggles for African Americans. This fight aimed to dismantle a system of oppression that denied African Americans' fundamental rights and opportunities. This led to the landmark legislation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. While this legislation granted African Americans legal rights, it also developed the responsibility of overcoming the legacy of discrimination, and actively participating in building a more equitable society.
