How Japanese Imperialism Affected Korea

Fighting Back

There are many groups highly recognized for their fight against the Japanese trying to kill the Korean culture.

Soando Island

Its name comes from the courage of the early island settlers that had served as a basis for protection during the Japanese invasion.

Soando Island is considered one of the "Holy Lands" of the anti-Japanese colonialism movement. The islanders established a memorial hall to honors the many patirots, such as Song Nae-ho, who fought head first against the Japanese. Every citizen on this island has a Korean flag up 365 days a year to honor and remember the patriots.s

Korean Independence Movement

Many organizations came to life and they propelled the Korean Independence Movement forward. They continued to protest through peaceful demonstrations and communicate their message, not letting their voices die before being heard. The biggest groups were Joseon National Sovereignty Restoration Group and The Korea Liberation Corps. Many forward bases were established in China, Russia, and the United States. Their motto: “Long Live Korean Independence!”

Yu Gwan Sun was one of the biggest leaders and martyr of the Korean Independence Movement, organizing peaceful marches and not being afraid to let her voice be heard.

Yu Gwan Sun's voice was never silenced, even after the Japanese imprisoned her and later killed her for her continued defiance and loyalty towards Korea. She had inspired thousands of Koreans to persevere in their efforts for indepepdence and her legacy still lives today.
