Throughout history, measles has been a devastating disease and a barrier to human health. In the 1930s, underrecognized heroes like Maurice Hilleman created the first vaccine against measles. In the short term, measles death rates plummeted, but in the long term, people began to question if the vaccine was truly better than getting the disease itself. Today, more people need to understand that the vaccine is safe and effective, and they need to recognize Maurice Hilleman and the other vaccinologists -- people who study and develop vaccines -- who broke this barrier.
