Short Term Effects

Breaking Barriers to Higher Heights

Immediate Impacts

Aeronautical Engineering Advancements

The Wrights improved with their second airplane, the 1904 Wright Flyer, at Huffman Prairie in Ohio, but it lacked the powerful winds Kitty Hawk had. It achieved the first circular flight, though it only lasted 1 minute and 36 seconds and flew 4081 feet.

After further modifications, the brothers built the world's first practical airplane. The 1905 Wright Flyer was able to continuously bank, turn, circle, and fly in figure-eights during more than 40 flights at Huffman Prairie. Two flights surpassed 30 minutes. Learning from their mistakes and previous models, the Wright Brothers were able to make great advancements. Their machines would be the beginnings of the era of aviation and aeronautical engineering.

"It is therefore incontestably the Wright brothers alone who resolved, in its entirety, the problem of human mechanical flight... Men of genius-erudite, exact in their reasoning, hard workers, outstanding experimenters, and unselfish... They changed the face of the globe."
 ~ Charles Dollfus

Military Takes Flight

The brothers successfully built more models and became proficient pilots. In 1908, Wilbur flew their plane in France, astonishing European aviators with their superior technology. Europe praised the brothers and upon returning home, they were given medals and a two-day celebration was held. Soon after, the US contracted the brothers to create the first military flyer.

The US Army purchased the Wright Military Flyer from Wilbur and Orville in 1909, designating it Signal Corps No. 1. Used to train pilots in the fall of 1909 and 1910, the introduction of the military airplane changed the way wars were fought.

Movement and Connections

"The air mail route is the first step toward the universal commercial use of the aeroplane."
~ Benjamin B. Lipsner, Superintendent of Aerial Mail Service, 1918

The US saw the potential in flight and took advantage of the faster method of transportation by starting US Airmail Service in 1918. In 1920, Eddie Hubbard flew the first international contract mail route, between Seattle and Victoria,

British Columbia. Charles Lindbergh was the chief pilot for an organization contracted to deliver mail between Chicago and St. Louis in 1926. In 1927, he gained world renown for the first solo transatlantic flight.
