Weeks Before

The church was just the start of the organizations of the demonstrations, they held prayer sessions giving comfort and aid to the opponents of the GDR regime. The residents of Leipzig and all over East Germany were dissatisfied with their country and how it was being run, the unrest is what led up to the demonstrations. The two leaders of the demonstrators were the two pastors of the Leipzig church, Christoph Wonneberger and Christian Führer, they had already been arrested for organizing the prayer sessions and they were warned not to organize any more demonstrations.
