Before America joined the Second World War, most women were housewives who looked after their children and did chores. Very few had jobs, especially those who were married. It was found that before World War II, four out of five Americans were against the idea of married woman holding a job. It was expected that a woman gets a job to pay the bills until she became married. Then she was expected to quit in order to start a family, while the husband became the provider, where she would become a housewife. However the gender roles would be disrupted following America's entrance into World War II.
