William and Charles' parents strongly valued education. Valuing exposure to diverse theories, they attended different medical institutions to expand their knowledge. William James Mayo studied medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1883, and Charles earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical College in 1888. The Mayo father's progressive ideals influenced his sons' careers. ​​​​​​​
