William Worrall Mayo, born in England, 1819, developed an early interest in chemistry and medicine, immigrating to New York City in 1846. Mayo’s pharmaceutical work cemented his interest in medicine. In 1850, William Mayo graduated from Indiana Medical College. During the Civil War, Dr. Mayo was a physician for Union Army.

In Rochester, Dr. Mayo launched his medical career in 1865 as a qualified physician, rare at the time.
