As sending telegrams was time-consuming and expensive, Thomas Edison created the quadruplex telegraph in 1874, which combined technological innovations to allow telegraph wires to send multiple telegrams simultaneously. This made telegrams significantly cheaper and more efficient and inspired technology used in modern digital communication.
